Situated in one of China's key universities, the Shakespeare Institute is an interdisciplinary research institution dedicated to Shakespeare and comparative literary studies. The mission of the institute is to promote Shakespeare studies in China and foster dialogues between Chinese scholars and Shakespeareans of other countries. It also serves as a teaching and resource center for literary and cultural studies that emphasize comparative and cross-cultural approaches to Shakespeare and Chinese drama. The Institute organizes scholarly conferences and innovative student performances, offers multidisciplinary courses, and provides advice on international exchange of scholars and students.
Based in Shanghai and affiliated with the faculty of literature, performing arts, media studies, and other disciplines, the Institute provides a platform for scholarly and cultural exchange among distinguished Shakespeare scholars, theatrical professionals, and other artists from all over the world. As an active advocate of cross-cultural inquiry into Shakespeare's works, the founding director of the Institute, Lingui Yang wishes to bring together interested scholars from the Shakespeare Association of China and from international circles of Shakespeareans for collaborative research and innovative performance. With the support of various international organizations, such as the International Shakespeare Association and the Shakespeare Center and Birthplace Trust, the Institute has successfully hosted two international Shakespeare forums in 2011 and 2016, and co-hosted Shanghai Shakespeare Festival and International Conference in 2016. We welcome partnership with international institutions for collaboration on conferences and other academic projects.
